Dare to Pair: Reinvent Your Ragù!
Spaghetti Bolognese, a dish we all know and love. However, as a society we are starting to recognise which foods are bad to consume in large quantities and red meat is one.
So, how can we reduce our intake of red meat without sacrificing the delicious taste of this dinner time staple. The answer is…
Simple Substitutions:
That’s right, chopped walnuts are a great addition to your Bolognese! Whether you are reducing your red meat intake and need something to bulk it out or just want a pure veggie option – walnuts are the solution you’re looking for.
By including some walnuts in your Bolognese sauce, you will be getting a boost of Omega-3 Fatty Acids. These are healthy, unsaturated fats which have been scientifically proven to help manage blood cholesterol levels as well as improve blood vessel elasticity – a common problem which can lead to heart attacks and strokes. They are also rich in antioxidants which can help to protect your cells from oxidative stress which leads to inflammation, helping to reduce the risk of developing certain chronic diseases.
Furthermore, walnuts are fibre-dense, which means they can help to support your digestive system! Leading to a reduction in the risk of developing colorectal cancer. On average, the UK population consumes just 19g of fibre per day when we are recommended to consume 30, therefore factoring fibrous foods into our diet where possible is important.
