Potassium

What is Potassium?

Potassium is a mineral that works to control the balance of fluid in the body and has a strong relationship with sodium in this role. The UK government recommends an intake of 3500mg of potassium per day for adults. For example eating 30g peanuts, 200g sweet potato and 100g of soya mince would meet the target intake.

What is the role of Potassium?

Potassium helps o regulate the water content in the body and to maintain a normal blood pressure. It also helps the nerves and muscles to function properly.

What foods contain Potassium?

Foods rich in potassium include bananas, broccoli, parsnips, brussels sprouts, beans, pulses, nuts, seeds, fish, beef, chicken, and turkey. Adults who eat a balanced and varied diet should get all the potassium required to meet the daily recommended intake.
