Iodine

What is Iodine?

Iodine is a mineral found in foods such as dairy products, eggs, and shellfish. The UK government recommends an iodine intake of 140µg per day for adults. These iodine requirements can be met with a balanced and varied diet containing dairy and fish. Those who avoid these foods should look for fortified products, such as plant based drinks to ensure iodine requirements are met. For example eating 100g grilled haddock or 2 poached eggs and 100ml semi-skimmed milk would meet the intake target.

What is the role of Iodine?

Iodine is involved in the healthy function of the thyroid (a gland in the neck that produces hormones) and the brain. Iodine plays an important role in foetal and infant development, meaning meeting iodine requirements increase to 200µg during pregnancy and when breastfeeding.

What foods contain Iodine?

Foods rich in iodine include cows’ milk and dairy, eggs, fish, and shellfish. Fortified products such as plant drinks can be a source of iodine for diets without dairy products or fish. More information about iodine sources can be found in the further resources section.
